Winter Recess
As we move into the colder months, we want to share an important reminder about our outdoor play policy for NYCPS. Whenever possible, we believe that children benefit greatly from time outdoors—even in cold weather. Fresh air and movement are essential parts of a healthy school day.
Unless it is actively snowing, there is visible ice on the playground, or the wind-chill factor drops below 0°F (-18°C), schools should not restrict outdoor play based on temperature alone. With this in mind, we will continue to provide outdoor recess whenever conditions are safe. That being said, we would never put students at risk, and the safety and well-being of our children will always guide our decisions.
We kindly ask families to help prepare students for colder days. Please ensure your child comes to school dressed in warm layers, with hats, gloves, scarves, and proper winter coats. When outdoors, our staff will make sure students are bundled up, keep skin covered, and monitor everyone closely for comfort and safety. If any student is in need of a new winter coat, hat, scarf, or gloves, please reach out—we will gladly provide one to ensure every child is warm and cared for.
For additional details about outdoor play during cold or hot weather, please refer to the “Guidelines for Playing Outside.” If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Mrs Caleca.
